Once trees reach bearing age, the equal ratio delivers more nitrogen than the tree needs and can trigger excessive leaf growth, reduced fruit set, and increased pest pressure. Transition to a fruiting-focused ratio as trees mature.
14-14-14 is generally too nitrogen-heavy for mature fruit trees and is better suited to lawns or fast-growing vegetative crops. On bearing fruit trees it tends to produce soft, disease-prone growth, fewer blossoms, and lower-quality fruit. It can be used sparingly on very young trees in their first season, but a balanced organic fruit tree fertilizer with a lower nitrogen ratio will deliver better long-term results.
The main application should go down in early spring as buds begin to swell, typically March in most temperate regions. Reduced shoot growth under six to eight inches per year, smaller-than-normal fruit, and poor fruit set are also indicators that nutrition is lagging.
