Many food storage containers, such as plastic storage containers, plastic wrap, and single-use plastics, often contain harmful substances like bisphenol A (BPA), which is known to be an endocrine disruptor.
Endocrine disruptors can interfere with the body’s hormonal system, potentially leading to adverse health effects.
Plastic storage containers (read more on this here!), especially those labeled with recycling codes 3 (polyvinyl chloride or PVC) and 7 (other, often containing BPA), may leach these harmful chemicals into food, particularly when exposed to high temperatures.
When used to store hot food, plastic containers, even those labeled as meal prep containers, can release BPA and other endocrine disruptors.
This can pose risks when consuming food stored in such containers, as the chemicals may enter the food and subsequently the body.

Is non-toxic the same as food safe?
Non-toxic and food-safe have slightly different meanings.
“Non-toxic” refers to a material that does not contain or produce harmful toxins or chemicals that can cause harm to humans or the environment. So, non-toxic items are generally considered safe for use and do not pose a significant risk to health.
On the other hand, “food safe” specifically relates to materials and products that are suitable for contact with food and beverages.
Food-safe items have been tested and approved for their compatibility with food, ensuring that they do not leach harmful substances into the food or alter its taste, odor, or safety.
To put it simply, while non-toxic materials are generally considered safe, not all non-toxic items are necessarily suitable for food contact.
For example, some materials may be non-toxic but not designed to withstand food storage conditions or may have the potential to interact with certain foods.
Which plastic containers are safe for food storage?
When considering plastic containers for food storage, it’s essential to look for options that are labeled as BPA-free and made from food-grade materials.
BPA (bisphenol A) is a chemical commonly used in the production of plastics and can be harmful to human health.
Here are some safer plastic options for food storage:
- Polypropylene (PP): Containers made from polypropylene are generally considered safe for food storage. PP is a type of plastic that is free from BPA and other harmful chemicals. Many reusable food storage containers, including some meal prep containers, are made from polypropylene.
- High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE): HDPE is another safe plastic option commonly used for food containers. It is known for being durable, resistant to chemicals, and does not contain BPA.
- Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE): LDPE is often used for plastic bags, wraps, and some food storage containers. It is generally considered safe for food contact and does not contain BPA.
- Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET or PETE): PET is commonly used for beverage bottles and some food containers. It is considered safe for single-use applications but may not be as durable for long-term food storage.
It’s important to note that while these plastics are considered safer options, using glass, stainless steel food storage containers, or other alternative materials for food storage is still recommended, especially when storing hot or acidic foods.
What should I do with my old Tupperware?
If you’re anything like me, you had a good amount of plastic Tupperware in your cabinets before swapping to a non-toxic food storage option. I chose a few different options for my old Tupperware!
First, I logged into our local buy nothing group on Facebook and asked if anyone wanted first dibs on the Tupperware. With this simple request, almost all of my containers were gone in 24 hours. Next, I took a quick inventory of what I had left and looked around the house to see where I could repurpose them.
I now use the old containers for things like storage (for cleaning supplies, battery recycling, loose change, etc). Other options would be to simply continue using them, donate the ones that are fully intact and with the lids, or upcycle them into something like a plant holder!
This was your full guide to the best non-toxic food storage brands!
As you can see, choosing the best non-toxic food storage containers is not just about keeping your meals fresh and delicious, but also about making a positive impact on your health and the environment.
These brands prioritize your well-being and the planet, offering durable, non-toxic options that will stand the test of time. Your taste buds, your health, and our planet will thank you.
