Description:
This is a Wal-Mart ad that is used as "greenmarketing" to show how the use of an enegry efficient light bulb can save you not only energy but much more. I think this is a pretty sufficient commercial because it not only refers to how wal-mart is going green but also how something as simple as changing the light bulb you buy can make such a difference. Advertising like this is important today so that people like me and you can become aware and learn new ways to be enviromentally friendly.

This add about the GE florescent compact light bulb gives great information that seems very factual. It says that you would save $47 dollars in electricity cost, and also if all the 200 million Walmart shoppers contributed, it would cause 11 million cars to get off the road. This shows that there is no or not much of greenwashing because it is helping our environment out in several ways, as well as lowering your utility bill too. This add also doesn't mislead you with the words or visuals, and involves a lot of factual information. However, i think this add could have had a better background picture. Instead of the forest, it should have had some visuals with the different examples it gave like, automobiles or a visual of how much it would save you. Even interviewing Walmart shoppers who use these light bulbs with their opinions and experiences would have be good too. These are a few of the reason i gave this add a fairly high score, and also because I have also used the light bulbs before and researched them and found similar information that is involved in this ad. I would also recommend these light bulbs for these same reasons, and because you will only end up benefiting from it.

This ad was straight to the point. It emphasized the cost advantages of choosing Wal-Mart while also giving details on how that one small product can positively affect our environment. In saying that the product can take over 11 million cars off the road, I was initially suspect about the green claim becuase it seemed overwhelming. But due to the volume of shoppers at Wal-Mart nationwide this claim no longer seemed as far off as I thought, and I felt like this statement gave consumers the feeling that they can actually make a difference if they purchase the product. Along with this statement, when the actress said all "200 million of us", it made the ad personal and I think that is key for ads that encourage consumers to get out and do their small part in such a big market. The simplicity of the ad was also a very good strategy; they were able to give key stats without flooding the veiwers with how "green" they are or making a long ad that would lose attention quickly. This also attributed to the low rating I gave the ad, I didnt feel "greenwashed" or overwhelmed with notions of how green everything is at Wal-Mart. I also thought the setting of the commercial was key, placing her in an area full of green just gives the consumer a view of the environment they could potentially improve. We lack many natural landscapes due to pollution, and urban development but seeing that backdrop could remind people of how beautiful the environment can be and encourage them to purchase green products. The ad also characterized Wal-Mart, they stayed in their lane in adding the low price benefits of Wal-Mart to go along with the environmentaly friendly product. Being such a large corporation, Wal-Mart didnt try to "greenwash" the consumer, but kept it strictly toward the product being advertised. If they are able to keep advertisements simple and to the point I think their green campaigns will continue to be effective.

Wal-marts green claims are superficial. The products they produce and the methods to sell them are not green. Sourcing globally and destroying local suppliers leads to a monopoly much like microsoft. Lowest prices, sure, but at what long term cost?CFL's are a double edged sword. They contain mercury and I have had some that fail in weeks. The failure rate exceeds their usefullness. Look at the materials used to make one, then analyse those numbers over a 6 month lifecycle and what you have is a poor product. CFL's have a place! For lights that are never shut off. Paradox huh? To save energy in the long-run, they must remain on. So, compared to a low wattage incandesent bulb that is shut off, the energy analysis is murky at best.Look at the energy to produce each. Look at the lifespan, but, most important look at the harmful materials used to make CFL's: plastic, mercury and electronic parts. Do you buy the CFL arguement? My experience has led me to say no. I have yet to have a bulb last more than 2 years. With that track record, I give CFL's a little thumbs down for now and Wal-mart a big thumbs down and always will. They sell landfill products that are cheap and do not last.

Well let's start out with the positive the facts they are giving sound legit. Also they are doing something good like gearing people towards a product that is green and telling them the advantages of purchasing the product, that a lot of Walmart customers might never have considered buying otherwise. They have started doing some things to green their act. However Walmart definately claims to be more green than they are, not just this commercial, but the company's views and actions overall. Let's talk about the light bulb that they are talking about first. Why are they promoting CFL's when LED's have been out for quite a while now and the facts are that LED's exceed CFL's and that is the product and information they should be highlighting not a dated technology. Now let's talk about other products they carry or don't for that matter. Their selection of green products is not very good to say the least and given the size and number of consumers Walmart has, they could make a drastic difference if they choose to. And as for the setting of the commercial it's a complete joke; Walmart isn't for the environment, but for their bottom-line.
