Why was this picture submitted? It's accurate and a good example of how much energy one CFL can really save.

CFL's have Mercury in them. Most people will not dispose of properly, and cause more damage than they are trying to prevent.

I'm not going to deny that compact fluorescent's offer benefits during use in the form of energy use reduction but they also have HUGE environmental implications at the beginning and end of the products life-cycle. -15 times more energy needed to produce than incandescent lamps. -Mostly produced in China with poorly regulated coal fired power plants. -Each lamp contains enough mercury to contaminate about 6,800 gallons of water. -90% of Americans don't realize CFLs are considered hazardous waste and require special disposal. In America we dispose about 600 million fluorescent lamps annually contributing about 30,000lbs of mercury into our waste stream and environment annually. CFLs are not an environmental cure in themselves and the fundamental problem is not our light bulbs, it's the dirty energy we use to power them. Dispose of CFLs responsibly and consider purchasing Green-e Certified Renewable Energy for your home and business.
