Malaysian Palm Oil Council

Already subject to an upheld complaint by the Advertising Standards Authority in the UK, this is greenwashing at its most insidious. In the same way the climate sceptic lobby are trying to promote CO2 as a 'life enhancing' substance, palm oil manufacturers are trying to convince us that their product is sustainable and socially beneficial.

This ad is another of greenwashing at it's best. Flowery imagery of nature makes you want to think it's just as natural as can be and doesn't harm the environment, but it is completely vague about the product itself, as well as it's true effects on the environment. Totally bogus.

There is little evidence that Malaysia practices sustainable agriculture. The comparison of Malaysia palm oil agriculture and rainforests is highly misleading, and the Malaysian government denies they were trying to make this comparison (see http://www.forbes.com/afxnewslimited/feeds/afx/2008/01/11/afx4519923.html).
